UK opens Department of Engineering Technology

Because of technological advancements, engineers are now needed to solve the most difficult problems facing humanity.

A unique partnership between Bluegrass Community and Technical College and the College of Engineering at University of Kentucky UK is helping to answer that call. Students can now obtain an Associate of Applied Science, or a Bachelor of Science, (BS), in Engineering Technology.

The Department of Engineering Technology offers undergraduate degrees in computer engineering technology and lean systems engineering technology. This was made possible thanks to a Toyota donation of $2.25million.

The collaboration includes BCTC’s Integrated Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering Technology programs.

The graduates of the new pathways are trained in the most current technologies and will have the practical skills to thrive in advanced technology industries.

The LST program will equip students with the necessary skills to succeed in highly competitive global markets and to reduce waste, improve quality output and streamline processes.

UK Engineering has been a partner with Toyota for over 25 years. The curriculum will combine classroom instruction with lab experiences. LST students can benefit from the expertise of professional instructors, many of whom were former Toyota executives.

LST students earn their AAS degree as integrated engineering technology engineers at BCTC’s Georgetown campus. After that, they work towards their bachelors degree at UK.

Bachelor of Science Computer Engineering Technology (CPT).

CPT is a program that provides deep knowledge in hardware and software design and maintenance. Students will learn industry-standard techniques for software development, as well state-of-the art problem-solving techniques to develop application code and firmware.

The curriculum will provide both classroom instruction and laboratory experiences that will give students a solid background in cutting-edge software development using current industry programming languages.

Aside from the architectural understanding gained through this program, participants will also be able to understand computer systems at all levels: low-level gate design through high-end microprocessors up to current bus standards.

CPT students earn their AAS in computer engineering technology at BCTC Newtown campus or online their first year, and then they move on to their bachelor’s degree at UK’s main campus.

Toyota’s Diversification of Engineering Workforce

A $2.25 Million gift from one the world’s biggest automakers made it possible.

These funds will be used for laboratory enhancement as well as the establishment a Toyota Engineering Technology (Distinguished Professorship)

Toyota announced that it would invest $1.7 million to help underrepresented students gain engineering degrees. The gift will be used by Toyota to support and establish the Toyota Engineering Technology Diversity Scholarship Fund. It will provide undergraduate students with scholarships each year.

Students with a diversity in their ethnic, racial or gender background will be considered for preference. This is provided that the preferences are specific to the university’s goals to achieve its educational benefits and to attract diverse students. Every student enrolled in the program must be a Kentucky resident with unmet financial needs to be eligible for the scholarship.

For full-tuition scholarships, 35 students are eligible starting in Fall 2021. Recipients will be selected based on their participation in the program, Kentucky residency status, and other preferences.
