UK health chief condemns unfair pricing of COVID travel tests

Britain’s competition watchdog declared Sunday it will examine the cost of COVID-19 test for travelers. It was created after Sajid javid, the Health Secretary, said that high prices were hindering some people from enjoying vacations.

Most travelers need PCR tests. They cost 75 pounds (USD104) each or 300 for a family of 4. However, some firms charge substantially more. Prices listed by government agencies range from 17 Pounds (USD24) up to 250 Pounds (USD347).

Javid indicated Sunday that Javid had asked the Competition and Markets Authority (“Competition and Markets Authority”) to clamp down on unfair market practices by test-providers.

He stated on Twitter that “people should be allowed to go on holiday to visit family or relax without worrying about high PCR test fees.”

The watchdog can directly intervene in cases of unfair practices. Ministers can also get advice from the watchdog so that they can act faster.

The agency stated that it was aware of “concerns about the evolving markets COVID-19 tests international travelers,” “We look to provide advice to the Secretary to State on how best we can ensure that travelers have affordable and reliable access to these tests.”
